Hey Brute. They should know the quad as they were the ones that sold it when new!! They also know the story behind when i got it. But basically it has had a bottom up rebuild and now it will run smoothly on tick over but when you introduce revs to it she will get very hot and the rear pot/carb makes it run very rough and back fires etc.

Have you double checked it's not drawing air in on the inlet manifld / carb joint, that would give you the symtoms you describe giving you a weak mixture and make it run hot and also make it backfire.

I shall have a look when i get the chance as the guy working on it has gone on holiday (how dare he) many thanks outlander. But as i have said its only ever the rear pot that runs rough? I am starting to wonder how much it might be worth now its rebuilt if i sold it as spares or repair. As if it was running perfect it would fetch £3.5k + its a basically a rebuilt quad now just has this one problem!!!

I never thought of that, good one Trevor, the rubber between carb and engine may have a split in it or the joint is not made properly .

Get a can of easystart and spray the inlet rubber area when its running, if it revs up then there is a bad seal.
I had a V8 that was giving me hassle, finally gave in and took it to a garage, turned out to be leak in inlet manifold

I see where you are coming from guy's but the way the carbs are built it would be both running bad if it was the rubbers. I am starting to wonder if the rear piston rings are bad as i did say to him when he stripped it that would i need any!! but he said no they are fine??!! and thank you guys for all the suggestions so far

Can you swap the coils round to see if there is aproblem with them or HT lead plug cap etc.

Serviced a boiler the other day and it wouldn't fire afterwards, a small electrical part gave up at exactly the same time as the service.

Could be something like that so if you can switch things over then do them all one at a time and see how it goes.

Stick with it, as the others say it has to be something simple.......... shot rings would be shown by white smoke from the exhaust.

I did that too Carl, I had to make sure she was fast asleep though
Shot rings might not make it misfire or run hot in my experience, had a ford capri with shot rings and it ran ok for 100s of miles before it got done .
