Polaris have just announced their 2008 range.

Big news is that the predator is out, replacedby a new 'outlaw' series (450 powered by KTM).

The Scrambler 4x4 sports is still there in original form - Perfection does'nt required modification :D *cough*

Link to the polaris 08 range is HERE (http://www.polarisindustries.com/en-us/ATV/2008Navigation/HighPerformance/Outlaw525IRS/)

Hmmmm Thats depends.

Quality is not just dependant on 'how good' somthing is, but also dependant on Price.

The Outlander is a amazing maching but at a premium price. Other machine may be just as ( or near to) capable but better value for money as they are cheaper.

No doubt if money was no object i would have a different bike from my scrambler, but bearing everying in mind it gives me everything i need at a price i can afford. And, as far as im concerned thats the ture measure of Quality.

Logical and true words by our captain of industry, if you like it and can afford it then its great value .

Polaris normally build a strong and reliable quad.

Like Rotax and BRP, the KTM's work really well in the Outlaw chassis, and now they ve done what everyone always hoped they'd do when they initally released the outlaw IRS, they've got a solid axle version of the 525 AND the 450, streamlining the range. All the main utility stuff is called Sportsman and their racing stuff has gone OUTLAW, the predator moniker is no more.

I think the KTM will be better out of the box but it is nearly a $1000 more that the Outlaw around £500 but the shocks would cost more than that to replace.

some say the ktm requires an awful lot of maintenance to keep it going well .

The Bomb Squad guys said as long as you maintain as required the are fine.

wonder what the maintenance frequencies are, motocross engines require frequent adjustment, dont want to be adjusting the valve clearances etc every weekend when should be riding

I spoke to someone yesterday and the said the 525 engine is pretty good.

RED PRED

i dont doubt that but did they mention the maintenance frequencies

Well mine is an oil and filter change every ten hours, so I wouldn't think it would be much different. Find someone with an 525 Outlaw and your question will be answered.

10 hours seems a lot to me, thats an high maintinance engine, my wife is almost cheaper than that !

These oils change intervals that manufacturers recommend, do you think it also depends on how you ride it ? If your racing i can understand 10 hours, but surley if your just cruising on road and gentle greenlanes you could get away with more than that.

Agreed with that Danny, ten hours would be every two weeks for me at least, I think that is just crazy and geared to make the oil retailers money, the Polaris book also says that ten hours is based on average speed of 10mph which proves what crap it is .
Racing is a different scenario but I still would not change the oil every race unlesss I was a professional racer .
Quad engines do not rev high compared to bike engines therefore I would not change the oil at 10 hours, I think the Pred tops out at 6500rpm which is less than half the revs of the average bike engine which has oil change intervals of 4000 miles or so, therefore the frictional wear on the engine is considerably less .
I change my oil and filter at 500 miles regardless of the hours and I bet my engine will be fine on that interval, it could probably go 1000 miles quite easily .

But think about it Graham how often do you just plod along when your on the road. you are at a higher rev range for a longer time than you ever would be in a race, apart from Weston maybe.

And my rev counter says about 7800rpm if its accurate at top end.

I agree with taht too Nige, I got the 6500 rpm figure off a dyno report in a quad shootout where the Pred smoked several other quads that I wont name

RED PRED

I tend to ride at 50-55 on road to keep the revs down, i will get a 36 tooth rear sprocket soon to further lower the revs .
I still dont think i will change the oil every 10 hours though .
