Is anyone into Photography in a big way ?

I am considering buying one of these Zoom lenses and i was hoping for some opinions ? I have a Canon EOS400 digital SLR.

I hav'nt had the camera long but i am intending to use it for our Quad events and doing some wildlife photos.

If you are upgrading the lens for better quality of optics and pics then you need to spend in the region of £600 for a quality lens. This will come with image stabiliser (very handy for on a boat) more f stops, less barreling on images etc.
A £100 lens may be worse grade optics than the stock lens but will probably give you more zoom capability.
As you probably know, more megapixels does not give you a better image, just a bigger one whereas a quality lens can transform your camera.
Leica make the best lenses and teamed with panasonic to make a dslr but the camera is let down by not so good electronics.

Well i have no ambitions to display my work for artistic critical acclaim :)
Like eveything you get what you pay for. The main difference in Quality of lens seems to be the amount of light they let in. A high quality lens (glass) has been made of better materials and refined to a higer standard and gives a brighter more livley pic

I just want to some photos for my own pleasure, my families and the website.

And anyway the member of BHQTA are all too ugly, fat and old to justify speeding a lot trying to make them look good !

I found this lens which looks good to me at £109:99 quid.

If i had £600 to spend it certainly wouldnt go on a lens - it would go in the new quad fund.

Why dont you get an airbrush then ! you can tell you are getting old when you need a wide angle lens for a portrait .

Lmao, you lot crack me up... I bought the eos20d 3 years ago and invested in a 17-85mm lens replacing the stock 18-55 which takes it from 3 to 5 times zoom. 85mm is regarded as the best size for high quality portrait without distortion.
I notice that you have chosen a lens 90-300. your stock lens is 18-55.
i fear you will miss the best range between 55-90 with your choice.
May i suggest a 28-300 that will then cover every aspect and for £55 more than your lens will be worth every penny as you will also get wide angle and not keep having to keep continually changing lenses which on a dslr is not such a great idea as you run the risk of getting a spec of dust on your cmos/ccd sensor which can then produce a noticable dot on every image.

I used to be into photograhy when you had to do everything manually, I had lenses, filters and loads of stuff, now I just use a palm-corder around the house *wink*.
Lots of good advice by our very own David Bailey *wink*, danny, you are spoilt for choice
