Guys,

Ages ago I bought a kill switch for the quad, I want to get it fitted now, and I understand it gives continuity when “off” so one wire goes to “earth” and the other to an ignition feed.

Any advice on the best way to do it.. i have attached some pictures.

Any advice would be good.

Cheers

If continuity when pulled like most kill switches then most are wired by one as negative and the other going to the positive feed to the coil, thus shorting it out when pulled.
I dont think this way is 100% great but its how suppliers wire them in.

I was going to PM you mate as I thought, if anyone knew you would, my problem is that as my quad is a "V twin" which coil to go for or both?

Cheers bud....

you wont be able to connect it to both as the coils will use the wire to short themselves out before the kill switch is pulled ?
some have been connected to the cdi, but again i think its risky shorting it to earth.
If you were to fit diodes (only lets current go one way) to the wire for the coil then it would stop the two coils interfering with each other.
Never come acroos a kill switch for a twin so am guessing.

Its getting complicated now so I will give it a miss, I can see what will happen, I’ll start to mess with things I know now’t about and create problems?

Thanks for the advice though mate.

For sale 1 new kill switch never used.. open to offers!!!

It would be so much more easier and sensible to have "pull to break" then it could be wired into an ingition wire or similar without any fear of electrical damage.

Beware there are two distinct types of kill switch.

I bought one cheap once from a boat jumble and then found when I went to fit it it wasn't at all compatible with my ignition system. It was certainly a case of buy cheap buy twice.

You could always take the easy route and not bother with a kill switch Chris !
I have never had one nor had a use for one, if you come off the quad it will come to a halt and stall anyway .
That kill switch would make a great murder weapon or sex toy!!

I have one fitted as you are not allowed on a track without one but have never ever used it..
the only time ive ever used one was when i put a 200hp 2 stroke on the back of a 400kg boat !

I can see the logic on a track .

I would like one fitted to the wife

But will it ?
when i came off mine at 45mph it zoomed off across an open field some distance before stopping !
when davey.h came off his carried on running and ran him over then hit a tree. would not have done it if the engine was killed instantly.
Turn one upside down, fuel starvation = very lean = revs to buggery before stopping.
Rear wheel could give you a serious skinning before cutting out !

On the other hand you could just fall off and quad instantly stops !

Surely the only way the engine could keep going is if the throttle was stuck open ?
The momentum of a travelling quad would keep going till it came to a halt and stalled as mine did when the tree stump gremlin grabbed my front wheel ;) .

Turning engines upside down reminds me of something I read about fighters in world war 2, the spitfires had a disadvantage against the ME 109 in that their engines used to cut out when flying upside down due to fuel starvation caused by carb floats shutting off fuel supply, the MEs had a Daimler Benz injected engine so did not suffer this, a quad with a carb should cut out anyway due to gravity closing the float valve .

Obviously there are instances that go against the grain ;)

Mercedes were doing this in the 1930s to try and beat British Racing Cars.
As told by Robbie Coltrane coutesy of the Sky Discovery Channel.

you do 40 mph in 4th or 5th, let go of the throttel and you will still travel some distance, same speed but pull kill and see how much faster you stop .

Somehow I have the feeling that at the speed you lot travel on narrow tree lined lanes then a kill switch would make very little difference to the outcome.

Yeh I would say go for one if your travelling in a desert and don't want the Quad to disapear into nowhere. But where we go, a tree or a fence is going to stop it soon enough or a bog.

Kill switches are for boats. And then you have to fall off it to actually need one.

Having said that they don't cost a fortune and if you want one then go for it. I am just trying to put things into context.

Maybe the item below might be a safer thing to have.

However I like this item. Just wish I had the hair to go with it.

And if you fell off into a lake whilst travelling on gravel you wouldn't drown then. Just make sure to let go of the Quad.

Chaps, the reason is exactly as Secret mentioned a few posts ago, I’m thinking of racing in the 4x4 class of the Gravity LC series and I need one fitted. My Brute force has electronic engine braking as standard which when pulling the power off comes in straight away, but I think it’s mandatory when racing to have one fitted.

If you need one for racing do they specify a certain type of kill switch?

If so does yours satisfy there requirements?

to put my 2pence worth in, i would have a kill switch any day of the week, what happens if you are last behind the group, you come off and the quad lands on the right hand side with the throttle wide open, been there lukly havent done that as i had a kill switch, but when i picked the quad up the throttle was jammed open:amen:

Good point Nelly, I always make sure the throttle is closed just before I part company with the quad LOL

It also helps to be riding two up, then when you come off you chuck the other person to the ground first making for a softer landing.
