I've been hearing a few bad things about the reliability and repair costs of outlanders.
A couple of ex-owners have commented that they broke down several times.
Anyone got any comments on this - i am considering one as my next Quad.

i am considering one as well, i was speaking to 660raptor on quadsuk, and he said the main probs with the outlander is:
the speedo has been changed 3 times they fog up in the cold
cvt housing lets in water on models that hve not been upgraded shocks/springs need changing modding they are bordering dangerous
the electrics can get dirt in the connections.
but all in all they are a good bike off and on road and fast.

Ouch, sounds like you have had some bad experiances with CanAm Allen.
I have to say that my Polaris Scrambler, beside's been a bit old fashioned is always there when i want it and always performes well. The only time i've been let down by it really is with pesky punctures.
Please can you details the problems you have had with your Outlander and now the renegade. Will be helpful for us.
Cheers.

dan, your scrambler is not old fashioned, it just does not cost £10K, it does what it says on the tin, polaris are very tough and reliable machines .
you have no reason to think it old fashioned .

For what you use them for reliability is the main thing Danny.

Dan, you know it makes sense, who wants to pay through the nose if its going to break down, simplicity is the key LOL

the main thing on the renegade is the poor quality wheels and tyres which i have now changed.....
the rear suspension has been giving me problems it needs to go back to canam for that sorting..
tims had to have a new speedo and also his wheels and suspension.
the problem is its always in the garage it takes months to get parts just not worth ten grand...
i would,nt buy an other but on the other hand when its working it is ace

OK here's my view of my outlander 800 max. Had it 9 months and 3000+ miles with no reliability issues at all and only costs incured are normal service items which I do myself and a few modifications. I'm not saying it's perfect, nothing ever is. The only problems I can think of are the speedo fogging up and the brake light switch failing, I live with the speedo issue as it goes away after a while and the switch was bought at auto factors for about £3. Others have mentioned suspension faults,- I can't fault mine. It goes anywhere you want it to in perfect comfort.

Nothing major, only niggly things like brake light switch and speedometer misting up.
What do you think of it now you've had a little go on it?

After having a test drive of Trevor's outlander on Salisbury plain I got to say that its the best Quad I've ever driven. A really comfortable ride with loads of power. Its a very big bike but didnt feel that way to ride other than the steering is a bit heavier than what im used to. I can see why is the bike of choice for those that want to want to go distance and/or carry a passenger.
Slide's round the corners no problem. :-) Go anywhere, Do anything and do it in style.

i think the renegade and the outlander are great quads..
they just have problems but unlike most dealers /man where they update the problem can-am just seem to send parts after parts that are still faulty ..
and the parts take for ever to come...
took them about 6weeks to get my wheels....

you often see on the american forums some severe running down of canadian quads saying the build quality is awefull and i always thought this was maybe down to the american/canadian hatred for each other but is it ?
the yamaha grizzly was the ultimate 4x4 for the americans for a long time then came the renegade but if its overall reliabilty is in question then maybe the tried and tested grizzly may still reign?

i must say after riding to madrid and back on mine taking it to mx tracks jumping ,green laning it etc i have really put it through some sh.t and it has only had minor problems...
my main problem is that the parts take for ever to come and when they do there no better than the parts you have taken off...
that said i have after market wheels now and there much better..
would i buy an other renegade?????
yes yes yes yes yes
i love it.

The lack of parts/quality parts was a real concern for me when I thought about an Outlander. One of the reasons I went for the Grizz in the end although I must agree, the Renegade is a cracking bike, got alot going for it.

Will be interesting to see who brings out a quad in the Renegade mould but better, the japs could do a good job with their high tech approach .
With regard to quad build quality, my Predator seems to be a very tough quad and has survived a number of incidents, i was the only casualty LOL, I personally cant fault it and there are a lot of them still being abused and going strong, i am not 100% happy with the wiring loom, it appears to be covered in a sort of wax covered thick cotton like material, dont know what it is but i would prefer a plastic covered loom, this can be remedied and has not let me down, the other dislike which i have sorted is to replace the crappy indicators which come with the quad, they looked like the poorest quality chinese crap that a bowl of rice could buy, must be a job lot bought for the homologated quads which are converted in Italy .

Aint most engines reliable nowadays though? the let down is all this high tech electronics that seem to be appearing more and more.
the beauty of a lot of quads is the simplicity and therefore reliabilty.
considering what a beating they get off road its remarkable that they perform as well as they do.

Quite right, its great owning a vehicle that can be serviced or repaired with a normal toolkit instead of a plug in computer diagnostic program, sadly it looks like future designs will be high tech, are we showing our age Secret or just being practical ?

Is the age of the electronically controlled machine more to do with the need for speed - EFI etc, lower emissions, lower noise bureaucratic bulls*it etc or just a race by the manufacturers to build the most technologically advanced machine?
