Hi has anyone seen the Satmap Active10 GPS???

I heard about it from some long distance “Adventure Trail/Daker” types and there is also an article on it in this months TBM (Trail Bike Mag).
I have had a look at the website www.azcari.com

It looks rather good waterproof and easily bike mountable, works with Memory Map and you can swap from north up to orientate yourself on the ground etc....BUT it sounds a tad expensive do you get what you pay for????

Anyone in the quad world any experience of this unit?
Is it the next step from Road Angel??

I would like to see one in the flesh so to speak.

No, I haven't seen it sorry.

I did see Avatar at the Imax in 3D though, and although I quite liked the 3D effects I thought the film was a little tedious & predictable.

I like the look of that Jagd.

Although the Road Angel solution has served us well for many years I think its time for a new solution. The RA/memory map has a few issues that should have well been sorted for now. Personally I would also like to see memory map updates the map data more regularly, as the current maps are far too old.

www.viewranger.com (viewranger) is the best bit of software by far for offroading.. It makes memorymap look very old.
It will run on iphone, symbian and android.
A £10 waterproof (to 3 metres) silicon/pvc phone bag cable tied onto handle bars and your away.. ! (cheaper alternative as many already have a phone).

Finlay sorted modifying the mounting bracket for the Cats handlebars (nothing wrong with whats supplied just my stupid high rise bars!!)

Still getting to grips with all the functionality of the unit but from the few short test runs I have had so far it is a CRACKING system!
Only time will tell if it is as robust as it needs to be I guess!
First proper outing tomorrow!

I found this whilst browsing "waterproof gps" on ebay..
For £70 inc postage,5" screen, running windows mobile (so m/m, tomtom, etc will all work) surely its got to be worth a punt ?

I bought the 7 inch version for the car.

Looks lovely in the car. Not suitable for a Quad though. Just not tough enough.

I was lucky to have a licensed version of MM on my MM 2800 which allows me to run a touch tablet device within the license terms. Otherwise I would have had to bought a new license.

Where were you then, I did not see much mud ;)
All you guys with your serious nav stuff, it was my basic old Road Angel that got us round today for less than half the money LOL ;)

Agreed but a boys got to learn somewhere and following the master seems like a good plan to me!

Or was that Masturbaterrrrrrrrrrrrrr!

Besides I have other uses for mine not just strapping it to my quad!

Regarding MUD you looked pretty dirtry by the end of the day AS USUAL!

Also I have found mine to have a few issues with position data when under foliage. The GPS receiver is not as good as the MM one.

I do have an external USB GPS receiver for my netbook which I considered plugging in to it to improve reception. However its a standard USB connector and the Satnav has a micro USB. Plus then I would lose the car charger. The micro USB is the only way to get power in.

Although a micro USB splitter does exist for one of the new phones (The name I can't remeber at the moment) people who have tried it have found that it won't charge and receive data from the two different connections at once. That was on the phone. So whats the point of that then.

Anyway i can live with the discrepencies. Its not as if I go up mountains in fog in my car.

I shall be looking at attaching my MM to the handlebars of my Quad the same as Graham on his Raptor.

I have ordered a waterproof case and shall do the mod once it arrives.

I am not as brave as Jagd Quad I believe my MM will get very wet and mucky whilst i am on the QZ so it really needs to be in a waterproof box.

If you want to go expensive you can buy RAM mounts for around £35 and a custom box to fit most GPS systems for another £35. I am hoping to do my setup for £16 I have spent on the box already and use some stainless steel nuts and bolts I have lying around.

I just need a source for small ss washers as i have run out of these at the moment. Screwfix used to do them but stopped a couple of years ago.

Correction. Just found that they have started stocking them again.

Good job as they are by far the cheapest place to buy them. Even though only A2 and not the full monty A4.

Away from the sea A2 is fine..
Cars with heated windscreens or heat reflective glass can seriously block gps signals..

I have not noticed the problem with the MM. Sat next to each other the MM is that bit more accurate. But it cost £250 and the 7 inch GPS cost £80. MMs own 7 inch GPS costs £450. So you can put up with the foibles as its still more than usable as a GPS in the UK.

Off thread a little the sets come with IGO 8 pre loaded. Its actually not that bad and looks prettier than Tomtom. I use it all the time now.

I guess with this GPS stuff you pays your money and takes your choices!

I ain't brave just did a lot of research and spoke to various people who used them in anger and whose opinions I trust (I cant believe I said that of some of them?).
Also the screen and circa 2/3rds of the satmap top is replaceable with a changeable top sacrificial screen unit @£18 for a pack of 3 off (no Jokes!) you can even have the whole thing factory serviced circa £40 back like new!

I have seen units that have done some pretty impressive journeys Top of Africa rallye raid, trans Pyrenees, Morocco & trans Sahara etc.......all with no real problems.
In fact the test unit I tried before I bought mine had been left outside over the worst 4 months of last winter through all the snow etc.. to prove a point re weatherproof-nus (is that a word) that when eventually brought in and charged up it worked perfectly first time.

Mine is mounted on an armchair quad in an area that is fairly well protected, I am always cleaner than Red at the end of a ride but that ain't difficult now is it especially with his mucky mind!

There is also an extra bump case available but have not needed it yet?????
That may well change only time will tell!

Secret / Red etc know a darn site more than me on the technicalities of using GPS/Satnavs etc but at the moment this one seems to work for me and my requirements.
Certainly be interested in comparing alongside the MM unit!

For a convinient self contained waterproof gps you probably have the best thats out there.
since the options are very limited they have you by the short and curlys price wise.
For ultimate pose you could buy an itronix gobook, a 12.1" touch screen lap top, waterproof to ip56, shock proof, crush proof etc (built to military spec and can survive a hummer driving over them) drop tested 25 times from 3 ft onto concrete to pass another test rating and it could sit on your front rack.
Can be bought used for as little as £50 upwards..
Did look at the itronix tablet (all run windows) used from states at £150.
Same military spec but think it may be a little large for mounting on a sports quad with its 8.4" touch screen ? shame really as they have superb reviews for durabilty, especially if you put a solid state hdd in them.

Thats not true Graham, I know diddley squat about GPS, nor do I have any desire to learn, I just want a system where I can make up a route on my PC, transfer it to a device and go out and have fun, and the Road Angel is spot on for that purpose .

I love gadgets.. hate to think how much money i have blown over the years and have a cupboard full of defunct stuff :(
My first gps/plotter was for my boat, must have bought it nearly 20 years ago, retail then was £3500, i got it for a lot less as a huge company had just gone bust so lots of good "deals" around ;)
I bought my car because it had lots of toys to play with ...bought a tv a few months ago, built in divx player (for them downloaded films) freeview hd (even though we dont even get it here) and internet connection for going online !!! Oh yeah,i can even watch tv on it.. lol
