So what are the details of the new Engine your putting in ?

Is it a stright replacement or something bigger and better.

WELLZY
12th September 2007, 09:11 PM
well, afetr much looking around i want to upgrade to the 600-1000cc mark, seen a nice honda firestorm r1 engine on ebay:cool::cool:

main prob i have is that i ain't got that much space to play with and the honda engine is a v-twin one, which means that the top of the frame will have to be adjusted a bit:rolleyes::cool:

NJK
12th September 2007, 09:44 PM
If you put a bigger engine in that you will probably bend the bicycle type frame you have.

WELLZY
12th September 2007, 09:49 PM
well the weight of the extra engine is not much more weight than the other ones, the frame might look weak but it is made of very very strong metal, but that can easily be strengthened:cool::cool:

RED PRED
12th September 2007, 10:09 PM
I think what NJK was rightly saying was that there is only one frame downtube to support the engine and it is not the weight that will do any damage but the torque reaction of a much more powerful engine, also those suspension units will not be up to the job nor the brakes, it is good to see projects like these being undertaken although I am surprised because you were singing the Chumps praises the other week, still, good luck with it and keep us posted .

WELLZY
12th September 2007, 10:15 PM
all of the suspension and stuff is being replaced over the course of this month, and i can see what njk is saying and the frame will be strengthened:cool::cool:

RED PRED
12th September 2007, 10:18 PM
How will you strengthen the frame, cut out the undersized section and weld in a new section or subframe with a twin cradle .

RED PRED
13th September 2007, 09:08 AM
Is this the motor you are hoping to fit in your Chump .

Should be quick if you can stop it twisting the frame too much

WELLZY
13th September 2007, 07:29 PM
yeh, but it is to big to fit in the bike and i have found a person who is selling two engine's for £100 so i will prob bag them tonight or tomorrow:cool::cool:

RED PRED
13th September 2007, 09:12 PM
are you sure you know what you are doing ?
when you say the frame is made of very strong metal it is probably ordinary mild steel and looks very small in diameter so i doubt it will take a lot of extra weight , remember it previously had a two stroke engine which is lighter than what you are planning to put in, it has probably been engineered to suit the correct engine .
this project reminds me of scralheap challenge LOL:D

WELLZY
13th September 2007, 09:21 PM

i might be going for a 250 engine, depending on the condition of it, i am an off roader, not a racer, all of that power will be wasted and seems pointless spending so much money on an engine that won't be put to it's limit's:cool::cool:

RED PRED
13th September 2007, 09:32 PM
if you are going for a 250cc then is it going to be much better than your 200cc, you could always search motorcycle breakers for an engine out of an off road bike with a larger capacity, say 300 to 400cc, a single cylinder two stroke would be good as it would be lightweight and small, remember four stroke engines are taller because of the camshaft/s and valve gear and would present problems with the top of the frame .

i no,
just no point in so much power, until i take it on the road when i am older:cool:

RED PRED

If you took that `scrapheap challenge` quad on the road you would kill yourself, to harness any decent amount of power you need to design and build a frame fit for purpose, you need to really know what you are doing and I somehow doubt that you do-no offence meant .
The best thing you could do is put the original engine back in the Chump and wait till you can get a proper quad :D

RED PRED
16th September 2007, 06:23 PM
Wellzy, whats the latest news on the rebuild, have you sourced another motor yet ?

WELLZY
16th September 2007, 06:31 PM
no, might just be getting a honda quad and doing a rebuild on the champ so i can still go to event's whilst fixing the champ:cool:

WELLZY
25th October 2007, 09:25 PM
right, decided to fix the engine and sell the champ so i can get some proper rubber and rims for this grizzly, and my kick ass speakers!!:D

not the same as a engine change i no but better then nothing, just started today, striping enigine down to clean it and repaint it, then will move onto the quad bike frame, but need some help from you's, the piston rings are more f***ed then the duck's that supplie oil!!:D

is there any were that i can get some made?

i don't no any piston ring makers!

RED PRED
25th October 2007, 09:54 PM
dont think you can make piston rings, you are going to have to do some research, who made the chump engine and what was it based on, you need to find out the distributors etc, this will possibly be very difficult and time consuming .
Good luck

you can get piston ring's made, i was just woundering if anybody on the website new or has used a company that make piston rings.

RED PRED
29th October 2007, 12:43 PM
It would be an extremely specialised business that makes piston rings to suit such vehicles as chump quads unless you know something that we dont

NJK
29th October 2007, 04:45 PM
I would say that it would be easy to get a piston and rings as long as you know what size you are after. Failing that can you not get the spec of the piston and rings of the web and then go from there.

RED PRED
29th October 2007, 08:54 PM
its not just the size though Nige, pistons vary due to the design of the engine, who is to say that all gudgeon pins are the same diameter or the top of the pistons are the same shape or even the weight of the pistons could be critical, I would not imagine for example, that you could use a yamaha piston on a chump even if they were the same size .
Could you not use a baked bean tin with elastic bands for the rings on your chump LOL .

RED PRED
29th October 2007, 08:55 PM
also i dont imagine there are many engines with the same bore and stroke for the same cubic capacity .

NJK
29th October 2007, 10:15 PM
No I agree but unless the engine is something special I would think you could take the piston to a specialist and they could match it up.

RED PRED
29th October 2007, 10:28 PM
mind you, i doubt the chump is a high precision piece of kit so the bean can and elastic bands might work ;):D the biggest decision-heinz or crosse and blackwell ?

NJK
29th October 2007, 10:39 PM
Tesco low cost range will do fine.

RED PRED
29th October 2007, 10:50 PM
probably a bit big for a 200cc engine, how about a baby food tin LOL

WELLZY
3rd November 2007, 06:14 PM
right, company has got back to me and require's an old piston ring and the piston so i took it out yesterday and to my horror found dent's in the top of it where the owner before me had put the wrong type of spark plugs in!!:brick::cc_hang:

RED PRED
3rd November 2007, 08:44 PM
Wellzy, I seem to remember reading one of your posts on another site where you said you changed the spark plug because the engine would not run after you went through mud, it may have been you fitting the wrong plug:frusty: now shall i look for that post or spare your blushes

the end would not have been long enough for it too hit the piston, does explain why i had to spend £30 on a new thread for the spark plug when i first got the bike:assassin:(that was before the new spark!!)

RED PRED
4th November 2007, 07:52 PM
"£30 on a new thread" :bangin: do you mean you knackered the thread in the cylinder head by cross threading it when fitting the new incorrect spark plug therefore requiring a helicoil insert to be fitted ?

NJK

Or re-tapping the thread.

no, it needed a new heli coil fitted when i first took it to a quadsuk event as it gave up, half the time whilst it was flyinhg through the air!!!!:scared::84:

and the tyre coming off was a bit anoying.

especially when it came off whilst i was being towed.:cc_hang::cc_rip:

RED PRED

oh dear, the only reason you would need a helicoil doing is if you bugger the trhead up, please be a bit more careful next time:frusty: or stick to a bicycle :****:

when i went to to the event i had only had the quad about four days, and the guy who had it before me was just a joke so i took her in and gave her some tender love and care and decided to have a bit of a rebuild as well as fixing her up to sell.

but now i have some better experience behind me i can fix a lot of stuff on a quad.:cool:

thanks rp, i'll try and get out on it soon, but can't promise!!;);)

i got it from a place called www.t-and-b.co.uk, and they were really friendly, offered us a drink showed us the quad and a few other's, gave us a live test of the auto belt system on the polaris, and also asked him if he could knock about £50 off, and he came back a siad i can give you a £100 pound off, for the tyres.

the trailer needs a few adjustment's here and there, as you can see from the pics, and we had to do 90 miles with the tailgate like that!!:rules:

but i would never ever go chinese rp, as i no that chinese stuff gives you the sh*ts:banplease:

it is a bit ruff around the edges in the pics, but it's what the farners call "clean"!!LOL but going off now to give it a good clean paint and adjust a crecky front suspension spring.
