If I was buying an ATV/Sports hybrid my spec would include the following;

Max dry weight 500lbs (achieving this would be difficult but not impossible)
Manual gearbox with reverse and switchable overdrive for road cruising
Switchable 2/4 wheel drive
High ground clearance
Homologated design
650cc minimum engine capacity
Large fuel capacity
Bodywork that keeps the mud off the rider

Any more ideas anyone ?

12v cigar lighter socket, at least two of them :)

I think the spec depends on the mode of use. My ideal ATV is a self contained, self suffient, offroadtourer. The kind of thing that you could use to dissapear into the rocky mountain for 4 days at a time. I can but dream :D

Not much call for that in the UK though as your never more than 20 miles from a town.

Speed is less important to me than off-road performance and reliabiliy

One of Actic Cat ATV's has a manual box but im not sure of any other. After having a quad with variable transmission i wouldnt really want to go back Its is so much easy to get over the rough stuff and you dont get the engine reving out. Im no expert on this but Automatic gears and variable transmssion seem very different beasts really and different to drive. With VT there is no concept of a number of gear, its changes the gearing dynamically according to the need of the terrian and weight so you are never in an inappropriate ratio.

I think mine bikes got plenty of low end power without needing the control of a manual gearbox. You need to ride my bike more and get a feel for it

Intresting thing ive heard about Quad racing is after a while nobody uses the clutch and just bangs up and down the gears, simply no time to mess about with clutches. I guess in that sense bikes like the Renegade are better to use in enduro than manuals, the bike does the work for you.

Before anyone flames this post its all just my opinion :)

You will do anything to ride my red rocket LOL, changing gears without the clutch is not a good way to treat a gearbox, think of all those moving parts wizzing round at high rpm then suddenly having to engage, i know racers do it and i have on my old bikes but generally not, i cant afford a new gearbox .
I like manual gearboxes because they are more efficient .

when i first had the champ, i had never driven a manual, i was coming off a track was thinking about somthing and changed down without putting in the clutch, and you could just hear the crunch of the gears over the engine noise:eek::eek: not nice at all!:(:mad:

How about caterpillar tracks, there is a company that makes these, I have seen a photo of some fitted to a Raptor .

i've seen these they are called mattracks i asked them about a pair of tracks for my timberwolf but they said it's really only best to put them on 4x4 quads and it test's any two wheel drive quad they found that they where to under powered:(:cool:

I would imagine that with four driven wheels driving the tracks there is less power going through each track roller so less tendency to slip at the track, ie the engine power is shared 4 ways .
I saw a picture of a Raptor fitted with them and will post it when I find it again .
